What Education Do I Need to Become a Real Estate Investor?

Toy House on a Table with Laptop and BooksIf you are interested in investing in Key Largo rental properties but are unsure where to start, you might be wondering if you need more education. In fact, there really are some things that a rental real estate investor needs to know to ensure that their investments are profitable. In order for you to build a successful real estate portfolio, you have to learn as much as you can about your chosen profession. But that may not require a college degree! Let’s take a look at the education requirements that are helpful for rental real estate investors.

Formal Education: Helpful, But Not Required

Usually, entrepreneurs or budding rental property investors have a degree. But you will be surprised that many rental real estate investors don’t have degrees in real estate or have degrees in different fields.

That is not to say that a college degree wouldn’t be helpful. A working knowledge of finance, economics, mathematics, accounting, taxation, and marketing is beneficial for real estate investors. This might be why some investors include a business degree or business classes among their business goals.

Business classes are usually offered by community colleges at a very affordable cost. These courses are frequently offered online or as night and weekend classes. If you are a busy rental property owner, this education will serve you well throughout your career.

Learning the Business

Alternatively, a lot of rental property investors learn the business outside the classroom. Some of the ways investors learn the trade is through online classes, mentors, books, and trial and error. Some investors have turned to selling books or courses on real estate investing. While there are some good ones, others are not worth your time.

If you really want to learn the business from a successful investor, your best option is to find a mentor. Look for someone who will not just give you advice, but will show you the basics and help you problem-solve.

Since finding a mentor can take some time, you can take some free online classes from platforms like Udemy or Skillshare, you can listen to real estate podcasts, or read some of the top books. These are also good ways for experienced investors to learn new skills, keep updated on trends, and keep growing their investment business.

Assemble a Team of Experts

The good thing about rental real estate investing is that you don’t have to know everything about everything to turn a profit. Experienced investors typically assemble a team of experts to focus on the different aspects of their investing business. Every real estate investor needs a great real estate agent, a lender (or two), an attorney, and an accountant. Many investors also benefit greatly from hiring a Key Largo property management company.

Aside from handling the day-to-day tasks of owning rental homes, a good property manager can also help you market your properties, find off-market deals, set accurate rental rates, and a lot more. When it comes to building a team, a good property manager should be at the top of your list.
