8 Things That Make You a Bad Tenant

Palmetto Bay Tenant Smoking a Cigarette in Her Rental HomeAre you an irresponsible tenant? Listed here are eight things that might make you one if you’re not convinced. A bad tenant can get into difficult circumstances like getting evicted, withholding your security deposit, or even being excluded from renting again. Therefore, if you wish to avoid any of those consequences, avoid engaging in any of the following actions!

  1. Not paying rent on time. This is obviously a major factor when it comes to someone being a bad tenant. Falling behind on your rent can cause your Palmetto Bay property manager to evict you since they have every right to do so. Not only that, but not paying your rent on time can hurt your credit score.
  2. Making too much noise or disturbing other tenants. You’ll give your landlord many complaints against you when you are always being loud or upsetting other tenants. The more problems your landlord hears, the less likely they will renew your lease when the time comes.
  3. Damaging the property or not taking care of it. There is another common sign of a bad tenant. Your landlord would have to spend money to fix the property if you destroy it or will not take care of it. This can be quite costly for them, and they may choose to hold back your security deposit or, in serious situations, evict you.
  4. Not reporting maintenance and repair issues. If you fail to promptly report maintenance and repair problems, they can end up costing your landlord a lot of money. You also run the risk of causing damage to your personal property in addition to the house (think water leaks that turn into a flood!). This is why it is critical to notify your landlord immediately of any problems.
  5. Having pets when you’re not supposed to. You may hope that your landlord will forget about the fact that you own pets when they are not allowed, but they won’t. If your lease expressly states that pets are not permitted, you are in violation of your lease terms and may be evicted from the property.
  6. Bringing in unauthorized guests. The same is true for uninvited visitors or residents. Your landlord needs to know who lives in your rental home for liability reasons, such as family members who stay for extended periods of time. Unauthorized guests could cause legal issues for you and your landlord if something goes wrong.
  7. Smoking inside or using drugs. This is another frequent sign of an unreliable tenant. Smoking inside or using drugs (if the drugs are illegal) can get you evicted, arrested, or both, by a frustrated landlord if your lease prohibits these and you do them anyway.
  8. Ignore your lease terms. You might think that ignoring any of your lease terms, including the ones we’ve already reviewed, won’t make a difference in the short term. However, your landlord will eventually discover this – and they will not be agreeable with it. This may result in you receiving a warning or even being evicted from the property.

Now that you’ve learned how not to be a bad tenant, make certain you avoid these unacceptable actions! The last thing you want is to earn a bad reference or become blacklisted, which will make renting your next home more difficult (if not impossible).
